How to Choose Your Perfect Honeymoon Destination

We can’t tell you which of the numerous honeymoon options is right for you. Every couple is different, but hopefully we can help guide you to the perfect decision. If you go through this three step approach, you should be able to determine your perfect honeymoon!

Step 1: Determine How Far You Want to Travel First things first: How far away do you want to travel? Do you have enough vacation days saved up, and can you take several weeks off of work or are you more limited by your job? Are you uncomfortable with extensive travel times? Destinations in Asia, Australia, and the Pacific Islands can take upwards of 20 hours of travel time from the east coast. Some European and African locations can also involve connecting flights and long travel times. Throw in the added hassle of acclimating to new time zones and a far-off destination can have significant drawbacks. However, some of the most beautiful destinations this world has to offer do require long commutes, and considering these tradeoffs is a completely personal decision.

Step 2: Decide What Kind of Trip You Want to Take Once you have narrowed down what part of the world you want to visit, the next step is deciding what kind of trip you want to take. Honeymoons can be broken down into three major categories: relaxing, adventure-based, and culture-filled. A relaxing honeymoon to a gorgeous island resort can be a couples’ dream. Soak in the sun and get pampered with delicious food, wine, and spa treatments at a resort destination. Some popular ones include the island of Maui, Caribbean-based Turks & Caicos or Pacific gem Bora Bora. An activity-filled honeymoon can involve adventures like scuba diving in the Great Barrier reef, climbing the Great Wall of China, or hiking through the Amazon rainforest, just to name a few. Finally, some culture-filled hot spots that still ring with romance include walking the streets of Paris, or maybe taking a gondola ride through the canals of Venice. Fortunately, for those couples who want a little of everything, there are plenty of destinations that provide gorgeous beaches, fun excursions, and a little education to boot. Check out the beautiful Greek island of Santorini, which offers white sandy beaches, sailing trips in the Aegean Sea, and even tours of their many wineries! Step 3: Pick Your Budget Alright—you are almost ready to book. The final step is to determine how much to spend. Your honeymoon costs can add up quickly, so here are some things to take into account when budgeting your trip:

  • Travel Distance: Although we already addressed this above, it’s important to bring it up again. A good rule of thumb is the farther away you want to travel and the more popular the destination, the more expensive it will be. Booking further in advance can lower airline rates, rather than booking last minute. Getting on top of the honeymoon plan is equally as important as any other element of wedding planning!
  • Hotel vs. Resort: Island resorts that offer luxurious amenities are not cheap! Sometimes, staying at a nice resort but booking luxuries (e.g., spa treatments) at an offsite location can save you some cash.
  • Excursions: It’s easy to get wrapped up in all the wonderful activities that are offered at your dream honeymoon destination. Just remember, flying a helicopter over an active volcano or swimming with dolphins doesn’t come cheap, but the memory will last a lifetime!
  • Honeymoon Registry: If you need those extra couple of dollars to help pay for your dream honeymoon, you should check out several websites allowing your guests to contribute to your honeymoon fund. Some good sites include Honeyfund and Honeymoon Wishes. On these sites, guests can put their cash toward a specific aspect of your honeymoon, like a night in the honeymoon suite, a romantic sunset cruise, or contributing to your airfare.  It’s an amazing alternative to the set of Tupperware you’ve chosen on your Bridal Registry!
