Dr. Charles and Barbara Smithen founded Sherwood House Vineyards in the mid-1990s after a lifelong dream of living among vineyards. The vineyard is located in Mattituck, NY, on the North Fork of Long Island, one of the better known wine-growing regions in New York state.
Sherwood House is located in a wonderful spot for grape growing, with gentle, north-south facing slopes and a bit of tree coverage. The area gets plenty of air and water drainage, which is important for the health of the vines.
We’ll be getting Merlot grapes from Sherwood House for our Fall 2011 harvest, but we should also note that they make their own estate wines with the fruit that they grow…practically in our own backyard. Local fiends will love making wine with this lovely locally grown fruit!
