Simply follow along with the WeddingWire infographic, and keep our month-by-month tips in mind, and the wedding day will arrive seamlessly, with all parties and vendors calm and ready to celebrate!
Brooklyn Winery couples have this one especially easy, as these three items—ceremony venue, reception venue, and wedding planner—are all tied together! It is absolutely essential to get your venue settled first and foremost so you can plan all of your other decor details around the aesthetic of the space, and, of course, to officially set the date! This decision will be one of the most exciting, and should get you enthused about the planning to come in the year ahead.
Vendors that will be present on the day of your wedding are going to be the next important decision. Photographers and florists often book their calendars months in advance, so you should do the same to ensure that you get someone with a style that you love, and a portfolio that fits with what you have in mind. Our wedding couples also get a pass on booking their caterer, as we provide all food in-house, making the experience super easy (and delicious)!
Music makes the party! Bands and DJs are vendors that also book far in advance, so you want to do your best to work with their timelines to make sure that you aren’t compromising on what you really want. Pro tip: make certain that your DJ (if you are going with a DJ rather than a band) has experience with weddings, as it will be their job to cue the first dance, announce the cake cutting, and help inform your guests what is happening when. Though it may be appealing to have a friend DJ, consider a professional.
The closer you get to your wedding day, the more fun the decisions become. This month, say yes to the dress! Alterations will take longer than you think—usually months—so getting the process started far in advance will ensure that you aren’t stressing over your dress in the weeks leading up to your wedding.
Another fun one—the cake! Pro tip: take advantage of this beautiful, once in a lifetime opportunity to taste ALL of the cake your heart desires! More seriously, decide what’s most important to you, the look, the taste, or a combination of both? Sometimes, the very beautiful, ornate cakes aren’t the most delicious, so think about which element you care about most when looking at cake vendors. Also, keep in mind that you aren’t limited to cake. Couple are increasingly opting for tasty alternatives like cupcakes, pies, or donuts.
Now you’re starting to get down to the nitty gritty details. You will want to think carefully about how the wedding day will proceed minute to minute, and which vendors you will need by your side to make the day a success. When thinking about your hair and makeup artists, remember to consider their personality as highly as their skills, as they are going to be in close contact with you on the day of your wedding, and having vendors that you feel comfortable around will do wonders for your enjoyment of the day. Having your hair and makeup artists booked 6 months out also ensures that you’ll have plenty of time for trials beforehand, to make sure your final look is just right.
If you need to rent transportation to bring your guests to your reception venue, or want to take a spiffy car at the end of the night, now is the time to get these vendors locked down. This step is sometimes forgotten until the last minute, as it is a pretty small detail, but is worth thinking carefully through the logistics of how you and your guests will get from place to place, especially if your ceremony and reception are in different locations.
You’re so close; we hope you are getting excited! All of the big decisions and vendor selections should be behind you, leaving the fun, little details. Favors are great to leave as a final project, as they usually include cute, personal touches. This is also one place where DIY is a good way to go. Having this last project in the final months leading up to your wedding is a nice task to focus on, without being overwhelming. Get your wedding bands sorted out now too, and revel in the fact that in three shorts months, you will be married!
In the last lingering weeks before your wedding day, it’s all about tying up any loose ends, and trying to relax! Make sure to touch base with all of your lovely vendors that you carefully selected, to be sure everyone is on the same page. Some things to wrap up: confirming shot list with photographer, nailing down timeline with your venue, and confirming speech order and first dances with your DJ or Band. Checking all of these little items off of your list will help you feel confident and prepared that your wedding day will be the best day ever, as it should be!
